What is leaf hairs?

Leaf hairs, also known as trichomes, are specialized epidermal cells that form hair-like structures on the surface of leaves and other aerial plant parts. They have a variety of functions, including protection against herbivores and environmental stress, as well as helping to regulate water and nutrient uptake. There are several different types of leaf hairs, including glandular trichomes that secrete oils and other substances, non-glandular trichomes that provide physical protection, and specialized trichomes such as stinging hairs that can cause irritation to animals and humans. Trichomes may also play a role in plant-pollinator interactions by releasing pheromones or providing a landing surface for insects. Leaf hairs can vary in size, shape and density between different plant species and can be examined under a microscope for detailed analysis.
